STATE DINNER MENU

The menu for the White House state dinner Tuesday in honor of India, prepared with the help of guest chef Marcus Samuelsson of New York’s Aquavit restaurant:

Red Lentil Soup with Fresh Cheese

Wine: 2006 Riesling, Brooks “Ara,” Willamette Valley, Ore.

Roasted potato dumplings with tomato chutney

Chick peas and okra

Or

Green curry prawns

Caramelized salsify with smoked collard greens and coconut-aged basmati

Wine: 2007 Granache, Beckmen Vineyards, Santa Ynez, Calif.

Pumpkin pie tart

Pear tatin

Whipped cream and caramel sauce

Wine: Sparkling Chardonnay, Thibaut-Janisson Brut, Monticello, Va.

Petits fours and coffee

Cashew brittle

Pecan pralines

Passion fruit and vanilla geles

Chocolate-dipped fruit

I understand that Indians have dietary restrictions, but I think the White House could have come up with a better menu.

British hostility in Iraq

Filed under: Current events — Tags: — Administrator @ 6:19 pm

“The deep hostility of Britain’s senior military commanders in Iraq towards their American allies has been revealed in classified Government documents leaked to the Daily Telegraph.”

It is a mystery to me why the British wanted to play along with Bush’s fascist adventure in Iraq in the first place.

Brizzly

Brizzly is a web-based Twitter and Facebook client that I have tried out today for the first time. The one advantage to it that I see is that the Twitter messages show the original URL, not the shortened one, and so you can have an idea of what to expect before clicking on a link. A disadvantage is that the font and physical layout at Brizzly are less appealing than at Twitter.

I haven’t seen my chipmunk neighbor since Saturday November 7. Maybe he has gone into his burrow for the winter.

Eatery in the comfort station

Filed under: Current events, Food — Administrator @ 11:49 am

Two different companies would like to open an “eatery” in a former men’s room on the Boston Common, reports the Boston Herald. The small building has been closed for about thirty years. I remember what it was like, a dreadful sort of men’s room frequented by homeless men. I can’t imagine that any amount of soap and water or any renovation can cleanse the place 100%. But then the target audience is probably younger people who have no memories of the building in the past. The Common is beginning to seem like part of the campuses of Emerson College and Suffolk University since they have opened dormitories nearby.
