The milk that I buy is almost always organic. I was surprised to see that an article in today’s Boston Globe says, “Sales of organic milk have plunged and farmers who got lucrative deals from a dairy industry that was thirsty for the stuff now can’t get rid of it. The volume of organic milk sold nationwide is projected to drop nearly 15 percent this year compared with 2008, according to some industry estimates.” Sales of organic milk account for only six percent of milk sold in the U.S.

Chipmunk crossing the street
I have noticed the chipmunk who lives in my back yard is spending a lot of time in a front yard across the street. I don’t like to see him cross the street because he does not do it very carefully. He just makes a mad dash and hopes for the best. The attraction across the street is a garden with lots of flower bulbs.

Plastic surgery
Would my appearance be improved by plastic surgery and the use of injectables? Maybe somewhat. But I could probably accomplish a similar change by subtle use of cosmetics. I certainly have no plans for surgery or injectables.

A hawk?
I heard a tremendous ruckus just now from many of the birds in the neighborhood, a combination of sounds that seemed alarmed and distressed and even one that sounded sad. I looked out and saw a bird, I’d guess it was a hawk, up on a tree branch picking apart the dead body of another bird, eating bits of meat and spewing feathers to fall onto the ground. It is still there now and has been there for several minutes.

Emmanuel Music 2009-2010
Emmanuel Music, Boston, has announced its 2009-2010 season. It doesn’t look very interesting. Haydn and Schoenberg don’t do much for me. I liked many of the things in previous seasons, such as Handel operas and oratorios and Schubert and Schumann songs. I hope the organization isn’t going to become too boring and fizzle away.

Dr. Steven Chu, United States Secretary of Energy, addressed the annual meeting of the Harvard Alumni Association this afternoon. It was a good speech, but nothing that was said was especially memorable.

A cardinal

I took a photo of a cardinal just now. They usually fly away before I get the picture taken.
R.I.P. a chipmunk
A few minutes ago I saw a dead chipmunk in the street. It had been run over by a car. I thought it was probably the one who lived in my back yard. But then a few minutes later I saw a live chipmunk in my back yard scampering around.
