My mother used to feed bread to some of the birds, and I’ve been feeding them since my mother died in January. If I don’t, some of them sit on the railing outside the kitchen door and wait for me. The birds that eat the bits of bread are mostly house sparrows and blue jays, occasionally cardinals and titmice. The house sparrows that we have in North America are not a native species. They are all descended from a few birds from England who were released in New York in 1850. They are now found in the 48 states, southern Canada, and northern Mexico.

Obama’s lead in the polls is shrinking
“In the latest NEWSWEEK Poll, [Obama] leads Republican nominee John McCain by just 3 percentage points, 44 percent to 41 percent. The statistical dead heat is a marked change from last month’s NEWSWEEK Poll, where Obama led McCain by 15 points, 51 percent to 36 percent.”–blog.newsweek.com

“Courting evangelicals and other religious voters, Barack Obama today called for an expansion of President Bush’s initiative distributing federal aid to church-based groups that provide community services.”–Chicago Tribune
He wants to give even more of the taxpayers’ money to unsavory Protestant ministers than did Bush, to further his own agenda. We’re supposed to think that Obama is the candidate of change.
