The Boston Symphony Orchestra is doing concert performances of Berlioz’ opera Les Troyens in two parts. I attened part one, the capture of Troy, last Tuesday night. Yvonne Naef was quite impressive as Cassandre. I wasn’t sure that I liked her voice very much at first, but she soon won me over. She was quite dramatic and I always found her singing riveting. It was announced that Dwayne Croft, who sang the role of Chorèbe, had a cold, but he was still quite good. He drank water at times and at times he turned his back to cough quietly. Marcello Giordani as Énée was pleasant but a little under-powered. The chorus and orchestra both seemed excellent to me. I look forward to part two next Wednesday.
